The Supreme Court debated Monday whether the fees charged by mutual funds are too high, and if so, whether investors should be allowed to sue the boards that approved them. The case put a spotlight on the often-cozy relationship between mutual funds and their advisers. It is the advisers who sponsor the fund and choose members of its board, who in turn decide on fees that go to the advisers.

A group of black Connecticut firefighters hopes to block promotions for white firefighters who won a discrimination case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The move threatens to re-ignite a long-running battle that became a central issue in the recent nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The black New Haven firefighters argue in papers filed Monday that they still have a right to challenge the validity of the promotional exam.

It wasn't a topic that Terry O'Neill expected to find high on her agenda as new president of the National Organization for Women, but she's tackling it with zest and determination. Elected as NOW's leader in June, O'Neill had plenty on her plate already - notably trying to gauge the impact on women, for good or ill, in the multiple proposals for health-care overhaul.

Senators paid tribute Wednesday to Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the longest-serving member of Congress in American history with nearly 57 years in the House and Senate. In addition to Senate speeches, a ceremony for Byrd will take place at the West Virginia State Capitol Wednesday afternoon, which Byrd will attend. Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, kicked off the morning of speeches.

Surely you remember Kelo v New London, the Supreme Court case that resulted in a drastic change to the United States' eminent domain law. In Kelo, the Court ruled that it was legal for a government agency — in this case, the City of New London, Conn. — to take property from one private owner and give it to another so as to increase government revenues. In Kelo, the Pfizer pharmaceutical company wanted New London to condemn private property so it could develop the property generally.
